Project

Hot asphalt mixtures have a huge environmental impact. Their manufacture consumes a lot of energy and generate a tremendous amount of greenhouse gases.

Due to the energy and environmental advantages of cold asphalt mixtures, it is advisable to propose the magnetic induction technology to reduce the curing time and to assess the self-healing capacity enlarging in this way their usability.

The goal of the SICA+ project is to verify the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of cold asphalt mixtures cured by magnetic induction and sustain their industrialisation.

The SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES expected to be reached at the end of the project are the following:

  • Validation of technology.
  • Assessment of the healing potential of cold asphalt mixtures by induction.
  • Technology extension.
  • Design and optimisation of prototype on a large scale.
  • Verify the environmental feasibility.
  • Spreading of results and knowledge transfer.

Results

1

CURING

Faster curing process. Shortening of wait time in order to implement roads.

2

MAINTENANCE

Non-intrusive maintenance, application of magnetic induction as feasible option to perform manteinance services without long traffic cuts.

3

USEFUL LIFE

Enlargement of useful life of cold asphalt pavements.
